When I was in the States last summer I fell in love with the regular, cheap 80 dollar Huffy Cranbrook cruiser bicycle. I wanted to take it back with me to Croatia. The airport fee was ridiculous, obviously, so I went to a UPS and all the other major shipping guys and the prices wer e well over 1000 dollars. For a bike worth 80 bucks new. I still really want one. Any ideas?
P.S. this passion I have for cruiser bikes stems from the fact that they’re really rare and expensive here in Croatia. Like, 10 times the price. I can’t find a cheap one anywhere, even used. So that’s why I’m even
considering the shipping.
Do any of you have any experience with stuff like this?
I appreciate any ideas. Thanks!

Wat if you disassemble it as much as possible? Could u fit it in a large suitcase? I'm thinking even taking the handlebars/fork off

Oddball suggestion: can you have a local frame builder make you one affordably?

This place says they’ll do package forwarding for ~$300 (for a 40lb package without dimensions specified ) : https://www.usgobuy.com/en/dhl/shipping-us-to-croatia.html (never used them)
I have no idea if that’s reasonable. Part of the problem is that a bike will be both bulky and heavy, which is not a good combination for shipping.

This. Bikes used to come in boxes and one had to assemble them at home. Disassembling one to fit the parts into, say, a TV box is within the realm of easy peasy.

Might see if they have any international dealers or sell internationally?

Sail back on the Queen Mary 2 and bring the bike with you, because no baggage fees or weight limits on ocean liners?

Have you tried Bikes Direct? They may be able to sell you a cruiser and ship it at a reasonable rate.

Sounds like you have stumbled into a great business opportunity. Fill a shipping container with them and sell all the extras. You should make more than enough money to buy whatever bike you want!

AliBaba? Buy directly from the Chinese factory.

If you were still here, on many airlines, if you wrap a bike up in cardboard, you can take it as checked luggage for $100 or so.

They are still pretty big, especially once you get them into a carrier tough enough to deal with baggage handlers. It would still be oversized luggage on the plane.

They don’t ship outside the US unfortunately , he’d have to ship to a forwarder.

Is it available in Canada at all? You never know, shipping from Canada to Croatia might (I have no idea) easier.

Edit: JFC, even from my mid-Atlantic US zip code, assuming a 40lb bike box, is still $575. There has to be something damn close for less than $650USD (bike and shipping) in the EU.

Biturbo was looking for something from the USA to Europe and found that USPS had some cheaper (slower though) rates. That was for a box 1/4 the size though..

If there’s someone importing cars from the US they might be willing to help you out.

Nope. Any custom build like that would be more expensive than shipping :/ Good idea, tho

Cool, I’ve had a couple people recommend private companies. I’ll check some out, thank you!
